Liquor Relaxation at GIFT City: Key Highlights
GIFT City

GIFT City (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City), located in Gujarat, continues to attract interest in the global economy by issuing new policy guidelines that increase its competitive economic opportunity as an international financial district. Historically, Gujarat has been a 'Dry State,' meaning alcohol is illegal to manufacture, sell, and consume. However, in a strategic move to boost hospitality offerings and cater to international professionals, the government has further eased liquor consumption norms inside GIFT City.

This adjustment allows non-resident visitors and foreign nationals to enjoy liquor at licensed venues by simply showing a valid photo ID, eliminating the earlier requirement for temporary permits.

What’s Changed?

Under the latest notification issued by the Gujarat home department, several key changes have been introduced:

  • No more temporary permits for non-resident visitors — By showing a valid Photo ID, you can drink alcohol at designated restaurants and hotels located within the GIFT City, if you’re visiting from another state or abroad.

  • Expanded consumption areas — Alcohol will now be served in areas other than the traditional 'winedine'. Alcohol can now also be served in flexible spaces (i.e., Lawn, Terrace, Poolside) that have received an official permit to do so.

  • Employees still benefit — Employees of GIFT City with a Liquor Access Permit will be able to host visitors and consume alcoholic beverages while inside licensed venues.

With these changes, GIFT City is now aligned with International Hospitality Standards and has increased appeal to global professionals, thereby enhancing its appeal as a world-class business destination.

Why This Matters for Investment & Real Estate

Organisations and individuals who are interested in either commercial or residential properties, it’s worth noting that GIFT City has now become more attractive due to the policy changes:

  • Globally competitive environment – easing liquor laws reflects a broader commitment to international standards, strengthening GIFT City’s position as a global financial hub.

  • Improved quality of life – Those who relocate to GIFT City for employment will be able to take advantage of a much more enjoyable and unlimited hospitality atmosphere.

  • Increased demand for real estate – Typically, the increase in providing a quality lifestyle will lead to an increase in demand for both residential and commercial properties in premium locations like GIFT City.
